All spring and summer, you grew apples. Now that fall has arrived, it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labors. However, you can do much more with your apples than simply eat them right off the tree. By combining them with other ingredients and using various methods, you can make mouth-watering dishes with your apples. Try some of these at your next party or get-together, or simply enjoy a treat on your own.
Apple Pie
Pie and autumn seem to go hand in hand. For example, a delicious apple pie is a must for your Halloween festivities or around Thanksgiving. Instead of settling for a store-bought pie, put your apples to use and impress your family and friends with your own. You’ll need these ingredients for the crust:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup butter (cut into half-inch pieces)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 8 tablespoons ice water
For the filling:
- 3 ½ pounds apples (you can use Granny Smith, honey crisp, or gala), peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter (cut into pieces)
- 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
- Coarse sugar, for sprinkling on top of the pie
For the crust, assemble the ingredients and make two equal-sized balls. Flatten into discs, cover, and refrigerate for a couple of hours. Then, flatten into 12-inch circles. Likewise, refrigerate again for a few hours. Mix the ingredients for the filling and then place on the crusts. Bake for 20 minutes at 425. Then, turn down the heat to 375 and bake for 40 more minutes.
Apple Pie Bars
Your kids won’t get enough of these. However, make sure they save some for you. These bars provide the sweetness you are craving. Be careful, though, because it’s hard to eat just one or two. They are perfect for an afternoon treat or a late-night snack. You can also serve them after your dinner party or pass them out as refreshments at your Halloween party.
